Description: Reverse reads in type: "IDENTIFICATION Weaving loom St. Mary's Woolen Mfg. Co. (blankets) LOCATION: St. Mary's CREDIT LINE: Mumm Romer Robbins & Pearson, Inc." Photograph shows what appears to be a Northrop power loom in St. Mary's Woolen Manufacturing Company. Ten inverted, cone-shaped spools of white wool sit on the floor in from of the loom. In the foreground stands a large support beam. The first power loom, a mechanized loom powered by a line shaft, was designed in 1784 by Edmund Cartwright and first built in 1785. It was refined over the next 47 years until a design by Kenworthy and Bullough made the operation completely automatic. This was known as the Lancashire Loom. By 1850 there were 260,000 in operation in England. Fifty years later came the Northrop Loom that would replenish the shuttle when it was empty and this replaced the Lancashire loom. The primary components of the loom are the warp beam, heddles, harnesses, shuttle, reed and takeup roll. In the loom, yarn processing includes shedding, picking, battening and taking-up operations. The photograph shows a manufacturing plant with three large smoke stacks, the closest of which reads "Ironton Solvay" The Solvay Process Company was a pioneer chemical industry of the United States, a major employer in central New York, and origin of the Village of Solvay, New York. The Solvay Process Company was a joint venture between the inventing chemists, Belgians Ernest and Alfred Solvay, who owned the patent rights to the Solvay process, and Americans William B. Cogswell (1834–1921) and Rowland Hazard II (1829–1898). The Hazard family invested in an affiliated business, the Semet-Solvay Company, formed in 1895. Louis Semet, a relative of Ernest and Alfred Solvay, had developed with the brothers a coke oven designed to recover valuable materials formerly wasted in the coking process. In 1892 the Solvay Process Company built the first of the ovens in America, forming the Semet-Solvay Company three years later to build and operate them. Coke plants were located in Ashland, Kentucky; Buffalo, New York; Detroit, Michigan; and Ironton, Ohio. Semet-Solvay operated its own mines in West Virginia, providing much of its coal supply. Description: Taken by traveling photographer Albert J. Ewing, ca. 1896-1912, this photograph shows a group of men sitting beneath a tree, some smoking pipes and playing a banjo and violin. These men are likely working at a tobacco distribution center, indicated by the Old Virginia Cheroots sign on the tree, and others advertising Schnopps Tobacco, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, and Early Bird Tobacco on the building behind them. Like most of Ewing's work, it was likely taken in southeastern Ohio or central West Virginia. Born in 1870 in Washington County, Ohio, near Marietta, Ewing most likely began his photography career in the 1890s. The 1910 US Census and a 1912-1913 directory list him as a photographer. A negative signed "Ewing Brothers" and a picture with his younger brother, Frank, indicate that Frank may have joined the business. After 1916, directories list Albert as a salesman. He died in 1934. The Ewing Collection consists of 5,055 glass plate negatives, each individually housed and numbered. Additionally, the collection includes approximately 450 modern contact prints made from the glass plate negatives. Subjects include infants and young children, elderly people, families, school and religious groups, animals and rural scenes. In 1982, the Ohio Historical Society received the collection, still housed in the original dry plate negative boxes purchased by Albert J. Ewing.
